Step-by-step guide to Google Search Console

To know basics of how your site is ranking in Google search, Google search console is the best tool to figure out this.  Below are the steps to know about your site using Google search console.
1. Gmail Account
To use Google search console you must have Gmail account. If you don’t have Gmail account please set up by visiting here https://accounts.google.com/SignUp?hl=en
2. Login to Google search console
Visit https://www.google.com/webmasters/tools/ and use your Gmail account to login to Google search console
3. Add your site
There is “Add Property” button on the right hand side to your website as shown in below screenshot. Once you click on “Add Property” button you will get popup with textbox to enter your site URL and then click “Add” button. I have highlighted Step No.1 and 2 in red below screenshot.

4. Verify your site

There are two main methods to verify your site. First and recommend approach is to HTML upload file. For the details steps please check the below screenshot.

Second approach is alternate methods.  There are four alternate methods. Please check the screenshot for the details.

Yes you have added your site to Google search console. How easy it is to add your site to search console, isn’t it!!!
5.To know more about your site
Once you add your site to Google search console you will see your site as shown in below screenshot. To know more about your site click on URL of site which is highlighted in red in below screenshot.

6. Dashboard
As you click on your site URL you will be redirected to Dashboard. Dashboard will give you the details like current status in terms of Crawl errors, total clicks and sitemaps. You need fix crawl errors to rank up high in Google search and finally it should be in status of as shown in below screenshots with green mark.

Second is Google Analytics, it will give you insight of your site in terms of number of total clicks on particular day. I have copy pasted the screenshot for your easy reference.

Third widget on dashboard is Sitemaps. XML Sitemaps are important for SEO because they make it easier for Google to find your site’s pages—this is important because Google ranks web PAGES not just websites. There is no downside of having an XML Sitemap and having one can improve your SEO, so we highly recommend them.
