1. Title of your Blog or Page

It is very important that title of your blog or page chosen very carefully and it should include three to four or five keywords that you are looking to rank your page on any search engine.

But the question is how do I choose my title?

Let’s say you want to write blog for “diet plan to lose weight”.  Search for these keywords and check top 3-4 results and pick up some effective keywords that you think are very relevant to your topic.

Next question is what do I mean when I say effective keywords. If you analyze the below screenshot carefully then you will realize every post that has been ranked have some common keywords in it and these are effective keywords.

Title of your Blog or Page

If you notice one more thing in the above screenshot that title with number is ranking higher than other pages. Have you ever think about it why it is ranking higher?

It is more of human behavior that we always want to fix number of ways doing or some fix number of steps to achieve anything.  Once this kind of title get ranked on first page of Google search, naturally it start getting more click and as it keep getting more clicks Google thinks that it is very relevant result for the users and boost the rank of such pages.

Also check the bottom of the page where Google is suggesting some of the links for your search as shown in the screenshot below.

After analyzing keywords from top searches and bottom keywords it is time for you to create title with this effective keywords.

2. Search Engine Friendly URL

Friendly URL

In order ranks higher you need to use search engine friendly URL but the question is how do I know what search engine friendly URL looks like?

Answer is very simple, you should use three to four or five keywords from your blog or page title. Ensure that keywords you choose to use in URL either put together or separated by hyphen(-) but never use underscore(_).Once you form the URL as I stated this will effectively means for Google that you are trying to rank for this keywords and your content is relevant to what is there in title as well as in URL.

3. Use Images and Videos

“Picture is worth thousands words”. Haven’t you heard above sing before? I am sure you have.

Below are some most important reasons why you should use images and video in post.

  • Human tendency to understand picture better and fast than words
  • Increase the length of the content
  • Makes content visually appealing
  • Help in image and video search
  • Content looks complete with images and video

With above all reasons, Google also rank your page higher as it appear to be a thorough content and want to provide best user experience in Google search. If you want to have detail look about the importance of the images please checkout on Shoutmeloud blog.

4. Post Detailed Content

In 2016, Brian Dean conducted study to find the correlation between content lengths and below is the graph he used to support his conclusion

To support this long content rank higher I would like to highlight Google Webmasters Central Blog. Below is the highlight of that blog why long and details content get higher ranking.

If your content is detailed enough and it is very relevant for the user then it will also help to boost your dwell time. Dwell time is the time user spent on your page. If user immediately hit the back button then content is not relevant to the search query of the user but if user stays for longer period then it increase dwell time of the page and hence Google boost ranking of the page. Point to be noted here is that don’t stretch your subject unnecessary as it could potentially affect the reader.

5. Use Responsive(Mobile Friendly) Design

responsive designWhat do I mean by responsive design? If your website is easy to read and navigate on devices from desktop computer monitor to mobile phones then your website has responsive design.

It is official that Google says more searches take place on mobile than computer in 10 countries including US and Japan. This is one of the very important reason why Google ranks any site high which has responsive design.

In future also the mobile search will see the increase trend and to stay relevant with this trend and future it is incredibly important that your content should render on mobile smoothly.

6. Use External Links

A study conducted by marketing firm Reboot aims to show that there is a positive correlation between a page’s outgoing links and its search rankings. Reboot concluded that Google can determine the authority of a page or website based on what other authority sources it associates itself with (by linking to them).

External Links

According to the company, Rand Fishkin of Moz observed the data and results before the study was published. Years ago, Moz published its own piece on why external linking is good for SEO.

As mentioned above external links are making positive impact but at the same time I think you need to take care of below two points to make this strategy more effective

  • Use high authority site as External link
  • Your content and external link content should be very relevant to each other.
  • Having too many outgoing links can be annoying from your reader points of view

7.Use Internal Links

Internal LinksInternal links play a vital role in building a strong foundation for an SEO campaign. They may not always be as valuable as external links, but they are a necessity for any website who wants to help users and search engines discover additional information

There are four main goals of internal links. If you’re wondering if you should create an internal link, see if it aligns with any of these goals. If it does, then creating it might be a good choice.

  1. Provide smooth navigation of a website for the users.
  2. Establish information hierarchy for users.
  3. They help increasing ranking power around a website.
  4. They help search engines discover and organize the content on a website

8. Social Sharing

In your blog ensure that social sharing capability has been provided to users. There is no direct impact on the Google algorithm but social sharing is one of the most prominent gateways to get more traffic on social media such as facebook and twitter etc…

Study by BrightEdge says that prominent social sharing can increase social sharing by 700%. This is incredible study isn’t it? and I don’t think that anyone could afford to miss this opportunity to increase your social sharing.

9. Meta Tags

One of the most important aspects of on-page optimization is put relevant keywords and description in Meta tags.

Meta tags are used to provide search engines with information about your page. To achieve high rankings, it has to do with relevance and user satisfaction, but including custom meta tags will influence users and increase your click-through-rate.

10. Meta Description

Meta description is key section for Google algorithm to determine about the content and relevance with audience it will find a value.

A well-written meta description can generate a competitive advantage in the search results, creating a higher click-through rate with a greater chance of conversions.  While there is a possibility that Google will omit the custom description and pull an excerpt of the content on the page, it is recommended that you fill in the meta description for every page of your site.

11. Site Speed

In today’s technology age, speed is essential. Nobody want to wait, do you? I am sure you won’t like it.

Let’s say you searched for something on any search engine and based on the title and meta description you think that this is what you are exactly looking for.  You clicked on that link but page is taking longer time to load then what will you do? Obviously you will hit the back button and that will increase the bounce rate of the site. High bounce rate will negatively impact the Google rank as algorithm will downgrade the rank of the page or post.

12. Body Tags (H1, H2, H3, H4, etc.)

When writing your articles, you should break up your content into smaller sections & paragraphs to make it easier for people to read. These sections can be given heading, which is where H1, H2, H3, H4, etc. tags are used.

Generally H1 tags are reserved for your main page title, with subsequent headings (just like the ones I have used throughout this post) being issued H2, H3, etc. Search engines use these to determine what is important within your content. This is why keyword rich headlines are more useful than generic ones. Make sure you write keyword rich headings in the order of priority in H1, H2 and H3 title tags. They are used by many crawlers to differentiate important content.

Here is what Google’s Matt Cutts has to say about repeating heading tags:

13. Keyword Density

What is keyword density? Keyword density is the percentage of the number of times a keyword appears on a page divided by the total number of words in that page.

Does keyword density affect my ranking? There is one belief about keywords density that Google can check keyword density in the text and, based on this, evaluate the rankings of a page. Watch below video from Matt Cutts of Google to know more about keyword density.

The short answer to this is, in my experience, there is no IDEAL %, and the video above confirm the same. But good to keep the keyword density between 1-1.5%.

Use your main keywords once in the first paragraph and again in the last paragraph. And use it in the content where it makes sense. Don’t try to overuse the keywords and spoil your content.

Keep the reader in mind and use your keywords wisely. There is some point with keyword density when the constant occurrence of the same keywords are not only unjustified, but constitutes a threat to the whole site. An excessive keyword density is known as keyword stuffing and Google penalizes sites for it.

14. Highlight important keywords in bold and Italic

Some webmasters claim putting your keywords in bold or putting your keywords in italics may be a useful ranking factor in terms of search engine optimizing a page.

It’s more true now than ever, that search engines value pages in the same way humans would (and do). If you publish a page that has very good content, then you will almost always be rewarded with higher search rankings. And, a big part of any good content is being able to be easily accessed or read by the person using your site. In other words, ease of use. To this finish, putting necessary words and phrases in bold or italics can make your pages easier to read.

Once you implement all these 14 technique, look into your Google Analytics and Google Search Console (Webmaster Tools) to see how your site is performing. If you want to know more about google search console read my blog about step-by-step guide Google search console.

These 14 techniques are just some of the ways that you can improve your on-page SEO. Any one used independently of the others won’t make much difference to your site ranking, however when used together, they can help to improve your site traffic.

They will help to get your pages working better, they will help to get your entire site crawled by search engine spiders, they will help increase the value of internal pages and they will build the relevancy of internal pages to specific keyword phrases.
